ANNOUNCEMENT: We are currently accepting applications for the Chicago Lateral Class. The Illinois State Police (ISP) Chicago Lateral Class Program provides an opportuity for certified police officers to become Illinois State Troopers through participation in an accelerated training program. The class will train primarily in the Chicagoland area for the 11-week program, with cadets returning to their residence daily. Cadets will still be required to spend the first 3 weeks and last two weeks of training at the Illinois State Police Academy in Springfield. Upon graduation, Troopers will be assigned to Troop 3, the Chicagoland area and covering the 10 counties outlined below, and will be required to reside in one of these counties.
The 10 counties of Troop 3 are: Lake, McHenry, Boone, DeKalb, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, and Will.
To be eligible for the Chicago Lateral Class, an applicant must still meet the requirements for pre-employment as well as the Lateral Entry requirements. Applicants will still be required to go through the entire Merit Board and Illinois State Police hiring process, however, we will streamline the Illinois State Police Academy training process.

For those who have received a letter from the Merit Board stating their application has been deemed acceptable and inviting them to take the Recruitment Test, an optional study guide is available for purchase at the link below. This study guide is not required to participate in the Recruitment Test.

On March 15, Governor Pritzker took aggressive action to minimize the spread of COVID-19 by issuing Executive Order 2020-07, declaring it is necessary and appropriate for the State of Illinois to immediately take measures to protect the public’s health in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, and encouraging public bodies to postpone consideration of public business where possible.
